If you put an ice cube in a glass of water, will water level will stay the same after the ice melts?
Is it true? What is that called?
Take an ice cube. The weight of the ice cube will always remain the same regardless of whether the ice cube is solid or completely melted. When this ice cube is put into a glass of water, the ice cube displaces enough water to support its weight. This occurs because solid water is less dense than liquid water due to the formation of a tetrahedral network of water molecules in solid water. Hence the volume increases when water freezes making it less dense. The extra volume accounts for the mass of water displaced despite the fact that a portion of the ice cube will remain above the water level in the glass.
Once the ice cube has melted, an additional mass of water has been added to the glass. However, when the the ice had not melted it displaced a certain amount of water equal to its weight. Upon melting, the displaced water is replaced by melted water from the ice cube leaving the water level at the same level.
The amount of water displaced by the ice cube is equal to its weight whilst frozen which is the same amount of water required to make the exact same ice cube. Regardless of whether the ice cube is solid or completely melted into the water in the glass, the water level will remain the same.
