Top Airlines Companies in China
Airplane is the most convenient and fastest means of transportation, though it is also the most expensive. Air travel can cover a long journey in less time, saving precious time and energy for you to enjoy the attractions in your destination.
Since 1978, China airlines have witnessed a dramatic improvement every year. By the end of 2003, a total of 1,176 domestic and international airlines were operated in China. According to a landmark pact signed between China and the USA on June 18, 2004, the number of weekly flights between the two countries will increase nearly five times from the current limit of 54 weekly round trip flights to 249 within six years. The hub of China air travel is based in Beijing, with Beijing being the base for international travel.

Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo $5.35 There is no more ringing title among World War II movies than Thirty Seconds over Tokyo, and the mission it celebrates was unquestionably historic: a 400-mile bombing raid to carry the war to Japan itself mere months after that nation’s sneak attack on Pearl Harbor. Yet the film is less memorable than many WWII pictures with less exalted factual basis. At the time, critic James Agee eloquently def… |

Antonov An-2 $29.95 8 1/2 x 11, 220 color and b&w photosInitially criticized as ‘obsolete at the moment of birth’ due to its biplane layout, this aircraft has put the skeptics to shame. It may lack the glamour of the fast jets, but it has proved itself time and time again as an indispensable and long-serving workhorse. In terms of longevity and sheer numbers built, the Annushka (Annie), as the An-2 was affectionately known, has few parallels. Indeed, limited production of this aircraft, which first flew in 1947, still continues in China and Poland. The An-2 is a very robust and easy-to-fly aircraft. This and its excellent field performance (thanks to the ‘obsolete biplane layout’!) have made it an ideal aircraft for utility operations from tiny semi-prepared strips, a fact which many air forces, the type has been operated by more than 40 nations, have put to good use. The An-2 is experiencing a revival now. In the mid-1970s the Antonov Design Bureau brought out the An-3, a turboprop-engined version of the Annushka. After nearly 20 years ‘on ice’, this design has been given a new lease of life as an upgrade program. This makes the An-2 the only biplane transport which remained in service long enough to pass into the 21st century! |

Aviation: An Historical Survey from Its Origins to the End of the Second World War $8.95 Republished to commemorate the centenary of the Wright brothers’ historic flight in December 1903, this classic text traces the historical origins of aviation from earliest times to the vast industry of modern aircraft manufacture. It is a story that chronicles the invention of the kite in China at least a thousand years B.C.E., the existence of the active propulsive airscrew in fourteenth-century Europe, the experiments and disasters leading to the development of a genuine flying machine by the Wright brothers. Aviation focuses on the years 18901914, a period rich in eccentric characters and extraordinary tales, when the science and technology of aircraft began to take off. The latter part of the book brings the story up to the beginnings of the jet age. |

Boeing Versus Airbus $16 The commercial airline industry is one of the most volatile, dog-eat-dog enterprises in the world, and in the late 1990s, Europe’s Airbus overtook America’s Boeing as the preeminent aircraft manufacturer. However, Airbus quickly succumbed to the same complacency it once challenged, and Boeing regained its precarious place on top. Now, after years of heated battle and mismanagement, both companies face the challenge of serving burgeoning Asian markets and stiff competition from China and Japan. Combining insider knowledge with vivid prose and insight, John Newhouse delivers a riveting story of these two titans of the sky and their struggles to stay in the air. |

Chennault: Giving Wings to the Tiger $32.37 A balanced, well-documented portrait of a brave and controversial airman who commanded a training air force for Nationalist China. Born in rural Louisiana in 1893, Claire Lee Chennault worked as a teacher before joining the army and becoming a commissioned officer. Although he was initially rejected for flight school, he continued to apply and was finally accepted in 1918. He eventually became the lead pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps’ precision flying team. During this time, Chennault developed air-to-air combat techniques that he believed should play a decisive role in warfare. However, his opinion contra-dicted the official Air Corps policy that military aircraft be used primarily for strategic bombing. Chennault’s frustration and dissatisfaction with this stance was so great that when Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek offered him the opportunity to lead advanced fighter pilot training in China, he quickly left the American military and accepted the position in 1937. There he played a key role in the formation of the American Volunteer Group (AVG), popularly known as the Flying Tigers. The aviators of the Flying Tigers fought against Japan on behalf of China before and during World War II. Early war newsreels showing them defending Burma mythologized the fighter pilots, and Chennault became a romantic hero to the American public. In 1942, the AVG was deactivated and Chennault returned to active duty with the Air Corps, but his disregard for traditional military procedure earned him many enemies among his peers and superiors and he eventually retired. This book was originally published in hardcover in 1987 by The University of Alabama Press. It was hailed as the best of severalbiographies of Chennault. Reference and Research Book News stated, This book is of far better quality than the others previously released. The research employed by the author and the depth of detail give the reader an accurate picture of this controversial and charismatic man. |

Gang of One $28.95 In 1966 twelve-year-old Fan Shen, a newly minted Red Guard, plunged happily into China’s Cultural Revolution. Disillusion soon followed, then turned to disgust and fear when Shen discovered that his compatriots had tortured and murdered a doctor whose house he’d helped raid and whose beautiful daughter he secretly adored. A story of coming of age in the midst of monumental historical upheaval, Shen’s Gang of One is more than a memoir of one young man’s harrowing experience during a time of terror. It is also, in spite of circumstances of remarkable grimness and injustice, an unlikely picaresque tale of adventure full of courage, cunning, wit, tenacity, resourcefulness, and sheer luck–the story of how Shen managed to scheme his way through a hugely oppressive system and emerge triumphant. Gang of One recounts how Shen escaped, again and again, from his appointed fate, as when he somehow found himself a doctor at sixteen and even, miraculously, saved a few lives. In such volatile times, however, good luck could quickly turn to misfortune: a transfer to the East Wind Aircraft Factory got him out of the countryside and into another terrible trap, where many people were driven to suicide; his secret self-education took him from the factory to college, where friendship with an American teacher earned him the wrath of the secret police. Following a path strewn with perils and pitfalls, twists and surprises worthy of Dickens, Shen’s story is ultimately an exuberant human comedy unlike any other. |

Lost Black Cats $22.22 On May 1, 1960, a U-2 was shot down over Russia and its pilot, Gary Powers, was captured, followed by Premier Khrushchev using the long-waited summit meeting in Paris as a public platform to denounce U.S. intrusion on Russian air space and to demand an apology from President Eisenhower. All these events made U-2 a world-renowned spyplane. This extraordinary high altitude reconnaissance aircraft had also been used over China and her vicinity. A US-ROC joint entity (Black Cat Squadron) was organized to conduct the operation from Taiwan for fifteen years. Five U-2s were shot down by Communist surface-to-air missiles. Two of the Nationalist Chinese pilots survived the missile explosion, yet were severely wounded, and then captured by the People |

Managing Sino-American Crises $24.95 The Taiwan Strait. The Korean War. Vietnam. The bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. The Sino-U.S. aircraft collision incident. U.S.-China relations have witnessed significant tensions and conflict over the years. Sensitivities and suspicions between Washington and Beijing have heightened as Chinas global power and influence have grown. Arguably, this new international order could increase the chances of a political-military crisisor perhaps outright conflictbetween the two powers. Managing Sino-American Crises brings together Chinese and American officials and participants in past confrontations, as well as scholars from both countries, to explore the changing features of crisis behavior and their implications for defusing future encounters. Mikoyan Mig-31 $39.95 The MiG-31 Foxhound long-range interceptor flew in prototype form as the Ye-155MP in 1975 and entered production in 1979, with the first regiments becoming operational in 1982. It has also been sold to China, and it remains in service in significant numbers. Yefim Gordon, the doyen of Russian aviation writers, continues to amass an outstanding archive of previously unpublished materials. Though the MiG-31 was covered to some extent in the now out-of- print and sought-after Aerofax on the MiG-25 and -31, this new book will be close to a definitive work on this important aircraft and include an enormous amount of newly released and acquired information and a splendid array of unpublished photographs (including detailed walk-around shots) and drawings. The narrative of course includes detailed discussion of the background to the project, its development, versions, service, weaponry, and comparisons with its contemporaries such as the F-14 Tomcat. The aircraft is a favorite with enthusiasts and modelers, and the extensive coverage, both technical and operational, backed up by high-quality images and drawings, will have wide appeal. |

P-40B Warhawk flown by Tex Hill 1/24 Scale Model Aircraft $135.95 The Super Elite P-40B Warhawk was one of the planes used by an American Volunteer Group known as the Flying Tigers . The group consisted of United States Army Forces, United States Navy and Unites States Marine Corps. Under a secret presidential sanction, the pilots of the group were recruited by Claire Chennault. They formed a fighter group with three squadrons that were trained in China. The group defended the Burma supply line to China. This happened before the Americans entered World War II to fight against Japan. The P-40B Warhawk was managed and obtained by Chennault as it was in production for British and Americans. The major difference between the P-40B Warhawk and Tomahawk IIB is the P-40B had an exterior fuel tank membrane while the Tomahawk had an interior membrane which is more effective for fuel tank leaks. The P-40B was purchased without gun sights, radios and wing guns. As a result, there was a continual difficulty for the AVG in Burma and China. On the other hand, the good qualities of the Warhawk included the pilot armor, self sealing fuel tanks, sturdy construction, heavy armament and a diving speed thats faster than most Japanese planes. In the year 1941, one hundred P40B aircraft were sent to Burma on third country freighters packed in crates. At Ragoon, the Warhawk was assembled and test flown by personnel of the Central Aircraft Manufacturing Company before they delivered it to the AVG training unit. The P-40B was the first fighter flown in action against the Japanese forces in Burma on March 13, 1941 before the US entered World War II. The Warhawk also played a vital role in the middle stages of World War II. Dimensions: 16 L x 19 W x 7 H |

Power at Sea $46.77 Bringing to a close his epic recounting of naval power in the twentieth century, Lisle Rose describes the virtual disappearance after 1945 of all but one great navy. In the first twenty years after World War II, the U.S. Navy continued the revolutionary transformation of sea power begun in the 1930s with the integration of sea, air, and amphibious capabilities. Between 1946 and 1961, the United States placed on, above, and beneath the world’s oceans the mightiest concentration of military power in history. Super-carriers filled with aircraft capable of long-range nuclear strikes were joined by strategic ballistic missile submarines. Such a fleet was incredibly costly. No ally or adversary in a world recovering slowly from global war could afford to build and maintain such an awesome entity. But the U.S. Navy warships steamed where they wished throughout the globe in support of a policy to contain the influence and threat represented by the Soviet Union and China. The 1962 Cuban missile crisis, however, galvanized the Soviet leadership to construct a powerful blue-water fleet that within less than a decade began to challenge the United States for global maritime supremacy. Confronting ever-growing Soviet sea power stretched U.S. capabilities to the limit even as the fleet itself underwent revolutionary changes in its social composition. The abrupt decline and fall of the Soviet Union after 1989 led to another reappraisal of the importance, even necessity, of navies. But the turbulent Middle East and the struggle against international terrorism after 2001 have demanded a projection of sea-air-amphibious power onto coasts and adjacent areas similar to that which America’s fleets hadalready undertaken in Korea, Vietnam, and Lebanon. This third volume of Rose’s majestic work offers readers an up-close look at the emergence of America’s naval might and establishes |

Pushing The Envelope $13.48 First published in 1994, this stirring autobiography of a fighter and test pilot takes readers full throttle through Carl’s imposing list of firsts. Beginning with his World War II career, he gained such commendations as first Marine Corps ace, among the first Marines ever to fly a helicopter, and first Marine to land aboard an aircraft carrier. His combat duty included the momentous battles at Midway and Guadalcanal. Not one to rest on his laurels, however, he participated in photoreconnaissance operations over Red China in 1955 and flew missions in Vietnam. In peacetime he gamed fame for pushing the envelope as a test pilot, adding the world’s altitude and peace records to his wartime feats and becoming the first U.S. military aviator to wear a full pressure suit. Such achievements also led to Carl’s being the first living Marine admitted to the Naval Aviation Hall of Honor, as well as the first Marine to be named to the Navy Carrier Aviation Test Pilots Hall of Honor. This very readable memoir is as forthright and compelling as the man it chronicles. |
